IBM on Oracle buying a sunset company like Sun

April 27th, 2009

To continue my previous post where Oracle announced to buy Sun Microsystems for a staggering $7.4 billion.  I have been wondering why IBM decided to back-out from buying Sun.  Click here to find out.  It’s quite a long list of why Oracle should not buy a sunset company like Sun according to IBM.

Why am I posting as a third-hand source of this information?  Because this article is authored by Robert X. Cringely.  What!  You don’t know who Robert X. Cringely is?  Geez, if you belong to the IT world you owe it to yourself to look after the best of what he has authored/hosted so far:

Accidental Empires: How the Boys of Silicon Valley Make Their Millions, Battle Foreign Competition, and Still Can’t Get a Date (1992, 1996) – I have actually not read this book yet, but I know it exists!  And that it became the pre-cursor to the next item here.

Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires (1996) – a documentary of very talented people working in their garages to build a multi-billion industry.  This movie explains some of our IT history questions like:  How did Bill Gates become the richest man in the world?  Why do Steve Jobs hate Bill Gates?

This is my favorite movie/documentary so far.  Look at the IMDB page of the movie and see who the actors are.  Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Larry Ellison (founder of Oracle that just bought Sun), and a whole lot more talking about the revolution behind the Personal Computer.

You may notice that it was made year 1996, just when the Dot-com bubble has started.

Nerds 2.0.1: A Brief History of the Internet (1998) – a sequel to Triumph of the Nerds which I still need to see, but again, I know it exists!  According to Wikipedia, this documents the development of the ARPANET, the Internet, and the World Wide Web.

This features Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, Tim Berners-Lee (credited for inventing the World Wide Web), Marc Andreessen (Mosaic and Netscape) and others talking about the Internet we so love today.

Quite a lot of accomplishments for Robert X. Cringely.  Not because I am his fan, I’m not, I just like him at Triumph of the Nerds, that is.  But all in all, this makes me want to read his blog every now and then.

I hope to see another sequel to the “Nerd” documentaries hopefully this year.  It should feature Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Cyril Pauya (founder of MrPau.com) hehehe in my dreams eh? ;)

Interesting post. Hope you can lend me of those documentaries if you have. Will also wait for the Nerd 3.0 if released. hehe
